WEDDINGTON – Weddington superstar Will Shipley added another accolade to his trophy case when he was named the North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year on Dec. 6.
Shipley has had a standout junior season, leading Weddington to a 14-0 record as they set to host Watauga in the NCHSAA 3-AA semifinals tonight.
Entering the game, Shipley has tied the Union County single-season record with 36 touchdowns, including 25 rushing scores, nine receiving, one interception return for a score and a fumble recovery touchdown.
On the season, he is averaging 11.1 yards per carry, running 148 times for 1,639 yards. He has also caught 30 balls for 509 more yards.
Behind Shipley, the Warriors are averaging a school record 44.4 points per game and have won a program-best 24 consecutive games.
This marks Union County’s second-straight winner, as Shipley joins last season’s winner Sam Howell.
