Inside the Huddle
The Rebels haven’t had a winning season in five years. It’s tough to move too far up the ranks in the Southern Carolina Conference, which produced two state champions last year in Weddington and Charlotte Catholic.
There will be three or four very tough teams at the top again this year, but Parkwood will look to improve on the one conference win and have the talent this year to do so.
Although not the fastest team in the league, all-conference do-it-all performers Austin Cain and Kyle Knox will get the Rebels going. Cain caught more than 30% of the team’s targets last season and made 84 tackles, which was second on the team. Knox was fourth in tackles and second to Cain in receiving yards. They won’t come off the field. Brock Cain has improved at quarterback and is in line for a big season. Linebacker Daniel Morrison led the team in tackles and is a big, physical presence to help lead a much-improved defense.
The Rebels aren’t ready to compete for a league title just yet, but they should win several games this year and be much more competitive in many more. Running back Sametrious Drakeford could be a difference-maker, but Parkwood will surprise a lot of people.
