Inside the Huddle
The Mavs started super hot last season, but fizzled out with four straight losses and a .500 finish that was a program-wide disappointment. They’ve moved on.
Coach Aubrey Carter said he’s most excited about his quality depth at nearly every position and his playmakers that will help ease quarterback Sully McDermott’s transition to full-time starter.
McDermott should put up huge numbers in this offense, and he has some big targets to throw to, including Ian Hutter (74 receptions, 874 yards) and Bryce Kennon. Tight end Aidan Twobly is another big body who should find work around the goal line and will help with the run game.
There are plenty of options to turn to at running back, including Daniel Daenecke and Jacob Terwilliger.
The O-line will likely start five seniors, including Sean O’Brien who is one of the county’s best two-way linemen.
Defensively, the Mavs will be more than solid up front with O’Brien, Tavion Breland and space-eater Geremiah Sherman.
The secondary is also a big strength with guys like Hutter and Jack Makarewicz patrolling the air.
One question could be at linebacker, where that group has some game experience, but none of them have been full-time starters before this season.
Another weapon the Mavs can lean on is the big leg of 6-foot-5 Caden Noonkester, who will kick and punt.
Last year was hopefully just a blip on the radar, but the grind of the Southern Carolinas can wear you down. Since the Mavs started 10-0 in 2017, they have gone just 6-8. A turnaround could be in order.
