Phifer Griffin, Metrolina Christian
Key stat: The six-foot-six, 290-pound offensive tackle has committed to Illinois.
Andrew Stark: You had offers from a number of other schools. Why did you choose Illinois, and how has the recruiting process been?
Phifer Griffin: It’s been fun and a great experience to have the ability to get the exposure you’re talking about. Being able to tour different schools, meet new coaches and have a bunch of contact with these people has been really neat. Illinois made me feel like family. They made it seem like I will have early playing time and that I was needed and not just wanted.
AS: What are your goals for this season?
PG: We’re definitely going to be a run-first team, and we have a lot of chemistry that we’ve gained throughout my four years playing. That and the ability to move different players around the field in different positions is what’s going to make us good.
AS: You know you want to run the football, but it’s a lot of responsibility on you and the line. How do you prepare for that?
PG: I need to make sure the newcomers – and especially the freshmen and sophomores – aren’t messing around in practice and staying on top of their responsibilities. If they do that, we’re good.
