Weddington, Cuthbertson and Marvin Ridge were all represented in MaxPreps.com’s 2018-19 MaxPreps Cup when the final tallies for the winter seasons were announced.
The MaxPreps Cup is a system used by MaxPreps to determine the top 100 high school sports programs in the nation. Schools accumulate points for finishing first or second in the state finals/championship or finishing within the top 25 national rankings for a particular sport. Points are also awarded based on the size of the state, the popularity of the sport, the playoff classification for the sport played and for the number of teams competing in that playoff classification.
Weddington was the top placer of the bunch, jumping 43 spots and coming in 32nd with 829 points after placing 75th after the fall season. The Warriors football and boys cross country titles won state titles in the fall. They also gained points with the boys cross country team finishing the season ranked 24th in the country.
This winter, the Warriors got runner-up performances from the boys indoor track and field team and the girls swim team.
They will likely jump in the standings after the spring numbers are tallied. The boys lacrosse team is the two-time defending state champs and ranked within Maxpreps.com’s top 25 nationally. The boys are 24th nationally and ranked first in North Carolina. In addition, the boys track and field team is expected to finish at least in the top two in the state at this month’s championship.
The Warriors baseball team was also the regular season conference champs.
Cuthbertson was next on the list with 690 points, which placed 80th.
The Cavs won the girls cross country championship this fall, but failed to make the Maxpreps standings.
However, a big winter propelled the Cavs into the top 100 for the first time.
The Cuthbertson girls indoor track and field team claimed the 2A title while the girls basketball and boys indoor track and field teams were state runners up.
This spring, the Cuthbertson boys and girls track and field teams both have a chance at state titles.
Marvin Ridge comes in just one spot behind the Cavs, as they tied for 81st with 685 points after placing 91st this fall.
The Mavs got off to a great start this fall with a state title from the volleyball team and a runner-up finish from the boys soccer club.
This spring, the Mavs softball and baseball teams have excelled alongside the girls soccer program. All three teams could make long playoff runs.
The overall leader after the winter season is Carmel (Ind.) who has six state titles, two state rankings and another runner-up. Carmel has 1,831 points.
Green Hope is the top-ranked school from North Carolina, coming in sixth with 1,262 points. The Cary-based school has five state titles and two state rankings.
Chapel Hill was 30th with 805 points and the only other state school listed within the top 100.
Charlotte Catholic was the only other Union County or southern Mecklenburg school on the list. The Cougars fell out of the top 100 after placing 77th in the fall standings despite winning a girls swim title this winter.
