MONROE – Nominations are being accepted for the 2019 Union County Man and Woman of the Year, considered the top volunteer award in the county.
The award is based on volunteerism within the county, not what an individual does as part of a job.
The chamber of commerce started the awards in 1958. Dr. Paul Helms was the first man to be recognized. Three years later, the chamber turned the selection over to past award winners. Sixty-one men have been honored with the award.
In 1985, the chamber selected the first Woman of the Year, Ruth Sikes Haigler. During the fourth year, the chamber turned the selection over to previous recipients. Thirty-four women have been honored.
Download nomination forms at www.UCManAndWoman.com. The deadline for nominations is Oct. 21.
Recipients will be honored at the annual luncheon in January.
