Parents may want to check the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry before taking their children door-to-door for Halloween candy.
The registry allows a user to type in an address to access a map that can be customized to show the registered sex offenders living within one, three and five miles. Users can see photos and conviction information for offenders.
Not counting incarcerated people, Union County has 233 sex offenders, including 129 in Monroe, 25 in Waxhaw, 24 in Indian Trail, 18 in Wingate, 15 in Marshville, 12 with Matthews addresses, one in Stallings, one in Weddington and one in Mineral Springs.
For example, 22 offenders live within a three-mile radius of Indian Trail Town Hall, including several convicted of indecent liberties with a minor.
Monroe City Hall has 54 offenders living within a three-mile radius. Narrow the scope to a one mile and there’s 27 offenders.
While the registry is designed to empower the community with information, it shouldn’t be used to harass people.
