Capote wins county showdown at Firethorne CC
Marvin Ridge’s Amber Capote held off Cuthbertson’s Layla Meric to win a golf match featuring four county team at Firethorne Country Club on Aug. 28.
Capote shot a nine-hole round of 36 to win medalist honors over Meric, who shot 37.
The Mavs dominated the team competition by winning four of the top six spots.
The top 10 golfers were: Hailey Pendleton, Weddington (42); Carmen Cary, Marvin Ridge (44); Kayla Hightower, Marvin Ridge (45); Braelyn Pippin, Marvin Ridge (45); Melissa Wyman, Weddington (46); Abby Reisinger, Piedmont (49); Hailey Flo, Marvin RIdge ( 50); MacKenzie Cook, CUthbertson (51); and Anna Medlin, Piedmont (51).
Mavs volleyball ranked within top 35 nationally
The Marvin Ridge volleyball team is coming off its first loss of the season, but it’s excusable considering all the Mavs have accomplished already this season.
They were 19-0 before losing to Wando in the “Gold Bracket” of the prestigious Porter Gaud tournament, but it’s a loss that had national implications.
Wando, who improved to 14-0 with the win over Marvin Ridge, is ranked 16th in Maxpreps.com’s Xcellenet 25 rankings after moving up a couple of spots.
While the loss was Marvin Ridge’s first and dropped them from 23rd to 34th in the national poll, it does nothing to change their aspirations.
Since Brooke Hammers took over the job in 2008 (then known as Brooke Sandburg), she has built quite a program very much worth commending.
After a 13-8 mark in her first season, the Mavs have posted a 210-30 record since the 2009 season under her guidance. Last year they were 28-2 and lost to eventual state champion North Iredell in the Final Four.
Senior setter Adriana Jordan recently passed the 3,000 career assist mark, and with 3,208 career assists through Sept. 4, is just 88 behind Lia Johnson’s 3,296 assists she recorded from 2009-11 at Providence Grove to hold the state’s career mark.
Jordan has a great trio of outside hitters to set to as Lexi Thomas (168), Mac Russ (131) and Maggie Young (109) have all surpassed 100 kills through 20 matches.
Thomas (29) and Jordan (27) have the team lead in service aces; Olivia Headrick (29), Young (27) and Russ (23) top the roster in blocks; Maddie Graveline (147) and Jordan (102) lead the team in digs and Jordan’s 473 assists, which come in at a 9.9 per game clip, is far and away the team lead.
Pirates tennis remain perfect after road wins
