Coach: Aubrey Carter, fourth season (26-12)
2017 Record: 10-2, 6-1 Southern Carolina Conference
Returning Starters: Offense, 5; Defense, 6
Graduation left holes in Marvin Ridge’s depth chart after a season that saw the Mavericks win their first 10 games before losing to Charlotte Catholic in the regular season finale and to Sun Valley in the first round of the playoffs.
But Marvin Ridge is not void of talent heading into the season as a strong kicking game, experience on the offensive line and several returning playmakers provides a solid foundation.
2017 backup Jake Cameron will start at quarterback and he’s already shown he can handle the bright lights.
Caleb Woodley rushed 107 times for 567 yards and five touchdowns last fall as a senior. He will be the bell cow in the backfield and is also a threat in the passing game.
Senior Sean Brown caught 42 passes for 535 yards and eight touchdowns last fall and is the team’s only returning starter at receiver, bit Ian Hunter, Bryce Kennon and Aidan Twombly will also line up at receiver.
The offensive line will be a strong spot. Chase Fiedor, Zach Yaggi, Josiah Snapper and Anthony Hinton all have starting experience.
Jonathan Clark returns at defensive end after recording seven sacks as a junior last year. Brae Lein and Lincoln Brownfield are expected to help up front, where Carter is hoping to rotate nine players.
Four-year varsity player Will Smith returns at linebacker after leading the team last season with 103 tackles.
Defensive back Carson Cross had seven interceptions and is back in the secondary.
Senior Jason Stricker will handle the kicking and punting duties. As a junior, Stricker recorded 52 touchbacks on 59 kickoffs, made 13-of-14 PAT kicks and was 6-of-7 on field goals.
“Once we get inside the 40, we feel we can score,” Carter said.
