Coach: Tim Speakman, second season (2-9)
2017 Record: 2-9, 0-7 Southern Carolina Conference
Returning Starters: Offense, 6; Defense, 5
The jump from Class 2A to Class 3A and life in the rugged Southern Carolina Conference was a big one as the Rebels as they went winless in league play. Second-year coach Tim Speakman, who also coaches the school’s girls softball team, has put a special emphasis on weight room training and has switched the Rebels into a 3-4 defense.
Parkwood opened the season with a 50-25 loss to Gray’s Creek. Several second quarter turnovers and mental breakdowns cost the Rebels the chance to start the season on the right foot.
Junior Brock Cain saw action at quarterback in the Rebels’ first game of the season and was effective running the football. Cain missed most of the 2017 season with a knee injury. Sophomore Austin Burns is also at quarterback after seeing action last season as a freshman.
Tanner Evans will carry some of the load at running back. The senior had two touchdowns in the Rebels’ first game of the season. Sametrius Drakeford will get him there, too.
Luke McWhorter and Kobe Funderburk will be counted on at receiver. D.J. Oakley will be another threat at receiver after catching a touchdown pass and scoring six times last year. Austin Cain is another threat on the outside.
Linebacker is a strength for the Rebels, and that is one reason for the switch to a 3-4 defense. Austin Cain, Funderburk, Keaton Anderson and Tanner Evans are all in the mix at linebacker.
Noah Lamb and Isaiah Rape will help anchor the defensive front as well as logging time with the offensive line.
Sophomore Makiya Evans and Brooks Mushington will be key in the defensive secondary for the Rebels.
Junior Austin Shook will handle the kicking chores for the Rebels. Shook started well as he hit field goals of 38 and 42 yards in Parkwood’s first game of the season.
