WAXHAW — When longtime Marvin Ridge baseball coach Mark Mennitt announced the 2018 season would be his last, the Mavs had a pretty good idea who would be his successor.
The administration was looking for someone familiar with the program who could continue the recent success. That man was Trey Putman.
“Having worked so closely with coach Mennitt and our baseball program for so long, coach Putman is well positioned to continue the tradition of excellence for Marvin Ridge baseball,” Principal Donna Cook said in a news release announcing the hire. “He fully understands and is already an important part of the positive culture and relationships that form the foundation our program.”
Putman has been an assistant coach for Mavs since the school’s first season in 2008. He has made many contributions for a team that has won 11 consecutive Southern Carolinas championships.
“Coach Putman is clearly one of the best baseball coaches that I know,” Mennitt said. “His knowledge of the game and passion for helping young people develop into men is unmatched. He has been a huge part of the success of Marvin Ridge Baseball from its inception and I cannot wait to see how he elevates the program moving forward.”
Under Mennitt, the Mavs won back-to-back 3A state titles in 2015 and 2016. This year they went 22-6, including 17-2 in the SCC and advanced to the third round of the playoffs.
The coach, who also has stops at Independence (for nine seasons) and Parkwood (four years), has 24 years of coaching experience.
At the time of his announcement, Mennitt said he’d like to take some time off to watch his children play sports and grow up. His daughter, Demi, is a freshman at Parkwood and his son, Sam, is a sophomore baseball player for the Charlotte 49ers.
Among other duties, Putman has served as a pitching coach under Mennitt. Now, he’s ready for his chance to lead the Mavs program.
“I am so thankful for the opportunity to be the next head baseball coach and understand the tremendous responsibility that entails,” Putman said. “Coach Mennitt has set the bar extremely high and I am ready to work to live up to that.”
