WEDDINGTON — The Weddington girls and boys lacrosse teams closed their regular seasons with blowout wins over perennial power Charlotte Catholic on April 28 to keep momentum going heading into the postseason.
The Weddington girls, who are 13-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state by both Maxpreps.com and Laxpow er.com, upended the Cougars 15-7.
They have outscored their opponents 212-76 on the season and haven’t been tested since taking out Fort Mill in double overtime with a 7-6 win on April 5.
The most recent win over Catholic, who has appeared in four state finals since 2010 with two state titles including the 2014 crown, is even more impressive considering the last time the teams met, the Warriors needed double overtime before beating the Cougars 12-11 on March 21.
The girls open the state playoffs on May 4, but the pairings have not been released as of May 1.
The Weddington boys, who are the defending 1A/2A/3A state champions, have been equally impressive this season as the Warriors (14-2) are ranked No. 3 in the state according to Max preps.com and Laxpower.com.
The Warriors closed their regular season with a 14-5 win over Charlotte Catholic on April 28 behind five goals from freshman Will Shipley and four scores and three assists from junior James Shipley. Austin Leonard and Anthony Todaro, who also had a team-high four assists, both scored twice and Michael Burns added the final tally.
Bryce Cheek made 12 saves in goal to lead the Warrior defense.
The Weddington boys, who are seeded No. 1 in the West, open the playoffs on May 4 against Hickory (6-8), which is a wild card selection to the tournament.
