BOONE — The Marvin Ridge boys and Cuthbertson girls dominated the field at the NCHSAA 3A West Regional, which was held May 12 at Watauga High School.
The Cavs only had one individual regional championship, but shined in the relays and used their depth to run away with the West Regional crown.
Dahlia Carter was Cuthbertson’s lone individual champion, as she won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.54 seconds and also placed second in the 200 (25.88).
But the Cavs had a host of top-five placers add to the team title.
Sarah LaTour was second in both the 1,600 (5 minutes, 11.31 seconds) and in the 3,200 (11:24.09), Caroline Smith placed second in the high jump (5 feet, 00.00 inches), Charlotte Sperry was third in the 800 (2:24.58), Mackenzie Townsend finished fourth in the 400 (58.71), Kaitlyn St. Hilaire placed fourth in the 800 (2:24.62), Leah Helms finished fourth in the 1.600 (5:17.06), Grace Coleman placed fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.87), Olivia Mague came in fourth in the 300 hurdles (47.46), Aubrie Farwell was fifth in the 400 (1:01.15), Jade McLain placed fifth in the long jump (16-00.25) and Alexis Levister finished fifth in the discus (102-06.00).
Cuthbertson also won a pair of relays. Farwell, Cutler, Florah Henry and Townsend beat the 4×400 field by nearly 12 seconds with a time of 4:00.36 and the quartet of Sperry, Gabriella Castro. St. Hilaire and Samantha Hirsch teamed to win the 4×800 by nearly seven seconds with a time of 9:52.15.
Farwell, Cutler, Henry and Angelina Mangiapanella also placed second in the 4×200 (1:44.67).
Kamryn Henderson won the shot put (41-04.50) by nearly eight feet over the field and placed second in the discus (107-02).
Marvin Ridge was well represented by its individual top-five placers. Jorja Medders was second in the 300 hurdles (46.21), Isabel Crandall placed second in the pole vault (11-00.00), Emma Stone was third in the pole vault (10-00.00), Elyse Wood finished third in both the 1,600 (5:15.22) and the 3,200 (11:37.64), Isabella Ochsner placed fourth in the pole vault (9-06.00) and Nicole Elchaar was fourth in the discus (103-10.00).
The Mavs were fourth in the 4×400 as Medders, Lily Savage, Leann Keller and Anna Ropers teamed to run 4:15.46 and in the 4×800 as Anna Utesch, Sarah Cuddy, Delaney Caulder and Keller ran 10:00.93.
Charlotte Catholic placed fifth in the 4×100 as Cameron Green, Emma Ellis, Kennedy Reid and Grace Mathis teamed to ran 51.47 seconds and were also fifth in the 4×800 as Emma Georges, Meghan Little,Carmen Jarrell and Megan Dest ran 10:29.36.
Overall, Cuthbertson topped the field by 38 points as they scored 130 points in the regional finals. The Cavs were followed by Marvin Ridge (85, third) and Charlotte Catholic (10, tied for 17th).
On the boys side, Cuthbertson was led by Brandon Black, who won the 200 (21.94) and the 400 (47.82).
Cuthbertson’s other top-five performers included Trevor Grant, who placed second in the long jump (21-3.50) and third in the triple jump (43-10.50), Quinn Cokley, who placed second in the high jump (6-00.00), Peter Shelley, who was third in the pole vault (14-00.00), Benjamin Cargnel, who placed fourth in the pole vault (13-06.00) and Kyle Stamper, who finished fifth in the 800 (1:59.82).
The Cavs were second in the 4×400 with Ashton Spangler, Daniel Chavez, Black and Aidan McNally running 3:27.66, third in the 4×200 relay with Spangler, Ryan Kobziak, Black and McNally finishing in 1:31.44 and fourth in the 4×800 as Paris Wortham, Stamper, Walker Lezotte and Chavez finishing in 8:13.05.
Marvin Ridge won two individual regional championships with Connor Gross taking gold in the 800 (1:57.75) and Myles Hunt winning the triple jump (45-02.50).
James Mazzarell placed second in the shot put (48-06.50), Peter Shelley placed third in the 300 hurdles (41.15) and Ryan Manns took fifth in the 200 (23.35) to round out the Mavs top-five finishers.
The Mavs won the 4×200 relay with Samuel Reinhart, Bradley Stanton, Thomas Bitcon and Manns finished in 1:30.24. Marvin Ridge also was second in the 4×100 relay as Bitcon, Stanton, Reinhart and Manns ran 43.95 and third in both the 4×400 with Gross, Alec Hunter, Reinhart and Shelley running 3:29.74 and in the 4×800 with Luke Wolaver, Jason Blizzard, Cole Jackson and Gross crossing the finish line in 8:10.45.
Charlotte Catholic placed fourth in the 4×100 relay as Matthew Kanny, Paul Neel, Jason Jacobs and Michael Neel combined to run 45.00
Overall, the Mavs won the region by 15 points over the field by scoring 91 team points. They were followed by Cuthbertson (65.5, third) and Charlotte Catholic (seven, tied for 21st).
