MARVIN – The Charlotte Catholic one-two punch of Drew Hackett and Jack Heath was too much for the rest of the Southern Carolinas Conference.
Hackett fired a sizzling 3-under par 69 and Heath came in at even par 72 as Catholic won the Class 3A Southern Carolinas Conference golf tournament April 19 at Firethorne Country Club. Colin Wholey added an 80 for Catholic. Will Sleeper carded an 81.
Catholic finished with 302 strokes in the 18-hole tournament, while Marvin Ridge and Cuthbertson finished in second and third-place, respectively. All three teams will advance to regional competition April 30.
Marvin Ridge is the defending Class 3A state champion while Catholic, which dropped down from Class 4A to Class 3A this year, finished fifth at 4A west regional in 2017.
“We had two players that were really strong,” Catholic coach Shawn Panther said. “I think the strength of the team all year is that different players have stepped up. First goal of the year was to win conference and we did that. This is one of three goals.”
On a windy day, Hackett fashioned four birdies around a lone bogey to finish a 3-under par.
“I hit the ball straight off the tee and I kept my ball in play the whole round,” Hackett said. “I hit the middle of the green and I two-putted from 15 to 30 feet all day. There were a few holes into the wind, and you have to hit it low and pierce the wind and hope you are OK.”
Hackett said he was more excited to see Catholic win a conference championship and advance to regional competition.
“I will be playing for the team because the team matters most,” Hackett said. “We have a strong top five, and I hope we can all play well at regionals.”
Heath carded five birdies. He survived a triple bogey at the par 4 No. 14 hole with a strong finish to end at even.
“I was proud of Jack because a lot of high school kids after a triple bogey can go in the wrong direction,” Panther said. “Jack fought back and he had three birdies in the next eight holes. That was a real credit to his mental state.”
Marvin Ridge finished with a 312. Chris Poor led the Mavericks with a 4-over 76 while Zach Pardoll fired a 5-over 77. Luke Cashion carded a 78 while Tyler Haines finished with an 81.
The top four individuals not on regional qualifying teams also advance to regional competition. Will Conway of Weddington, Hogan Nance of Parkwood, Garrett Snyder of Piedmont and Landon Howell of Weddington earned the top four individual spots from the SCC.
