WEDDINGTON – Weddington High didn’t have to look far for its next head football coach.
Weddington announced this week that current offensive coordinator Andy Capone would be the Warriors’ new head football coach. Capone, who has been an assistant football coach at the school for the past five seasons, replaces Tim Carson, who announced his retirement last month.
Capone is a physical education teacher at the school, and he is also the Warriors’ assistant baseball coach. He is a graduate of Sun Valley High School and Appalachian State University.
“Coach Capone exemplifies what it means to be a dedicated teacher and coach and is committed to the success of his student-athletes on and off of the field,” Weddington High athletic director Michael Hart said. “Coach Capone holds a true passion for football and will continue to build strong relationships with his players and the community. We are excited for him to begin his new role and wish him the very best as he begins his journey.”
Weddington won the 2016 Class 3AA state championship and the Warriors finished 10-4 while advancing to the third round of the 2017 Class 3A playoffs.
