The Mavs defense got to Sun Valley, generating seven sacks and holding the Spartans high-flying offense to just 20 points. This team tied the school record for wins, which was set in 2011, and continues to be the toast of Union County. A big test awaits this week, but the Mavs are a state championship contender either way.

2. Weddington (7-3)

The Warriors bounced back from a tough loss to Marvin Ridge and absolutely dominated Monroe, winning 34-0 for their third shutout of the season and second in the past two weeks. Warrior junior Max Brimigion caught seven passes for nearly 200 yards and a touchdown in the win.

3. Sun Valley (7-2)

The Spartans had a chance to send some shockwaves through the county, but came up just short in a 28-20 loss to unbeaten Marvin Ridge. The Spartan offense is as dangerous as anyone’s and is going to carry them into the playoffs and make them a very tough out. They should get back on track this week against Piedmont.

4. Metrolina Christian (8-2)

Ishod Finger broke the Union County single-season rushing record with another huge game that consisted of 262 rush yards and three touchdowns. He’s currently eighth in the nation in rushing yards, according to Maxpreps.com. They have a real shot in the NCISAA Division II playoffs, which start this week.

5. Porter Ridge (6-4)
Previous ranking: No. 5
The Pirates hung with Myers Park to keep it close much of the night, but the Mustangs scored late in the fourth quarter to take a 35-28 win. Malcolm Hines and quarterback Grayson McCall both ran for over 100 yards in the loss, which snaps a three-game win streak. The Pirates have another very tough test this week, but could play spoiler for Hickory Ridge’s conference title hopes.

6. Union Academy (6-3)
Previous ranking: No. 6
The Cardinals needed to get a win and came through with a dominating performance against Highland Tech. The Cardinals won 42-12 while gaining over 300 yards on the ground, but have a very tough test this week as they look to avoid losing for the fourth time in six weeks.

7. Cuthbertson (4-6)
Previous ranking: No. 7
The Cavs lost their third straight, this time falling 49-10 to unbeaten Charlotte Catholic. They have had a brutal stretch to close the year, but it doesn’t get any easier as they have to travel to Weddington, who is playing well as of late.
