Cuthbertson girls had top two runners and six times in the top 25
CHARLOTTE – The NCHSAA 3A Midwestern Regional girls cross country championship was thought to be a close race and lived up to the billing both in individual and team aspects at McAlpine Park on Oct. 28.
Cuthbertson freshman Madeline Hill won the regional title with a run of 18:23, edging senior teammate and N.C. State commit Sarah LaTour, who was a close second with a time of 18:32.
Hill’s time ranks 64th in the nation among all freshmen runners and is the third fastest such time in the state. It also ranks as the 11th-fastest time in the state regardless of grade and classification.
LaTour ran an 18:12 earlier this season at the Wendy’s Invitational. She holds the fifth-fastest time in the state this season.
While the Cavs teammates stole the spotlight, there was plenty of other great performances as 15 of the top 25 spots in the region were filled by Union County runners.
Cuthbertson had six of those times including Hill, LaTour, sophomore Gabriella Castro (19:27, 11th), freshmen Kaitlyn St. Hillaire (19:43, 15th), Tori Bridgforth (19:54, 16h) and senior Tess Nicholas (20:31, 25th).
Weddington had seven runners in the top 25 including Anna Brown (19:10, sixth), Nico Brown (19:25, ninth), Sydney Burke (19:26, 10th), Anna Davis (19:32, 12th), Sarah Bechtel (19:33, 13th), freshman Ilana Thommen (20:01, 17th) and Kathleen Abrams (20:17, 22nd).
Parkwood senior Anna Bristle finished fourth in the region (18:56) and was one of only four girls to break 19 minutes.
Piedmont had four runners in the top 33 as Jaeden Phelix (19:10, seventh), Carly Szymanski (20:27, 24th), Savannah Vickers (20:45, 26th) and Kaitlyn Szymanski (21:17, 33rd) ran well.
In addition, Cuthbertson’s Morgan Allison (21:47, 36th) and Parkwood’s Andrea Jauch (22:36, 47th) placed within the top 50.
Cuthbertson won the girls race with 45 points beating county schools Weddington (50, second), Piedmont (155, fifth) and Parkwood (251, eighth).
In the 3A Western Regional held Oct. 28 at McAlpine Park, Marvin Ridge placed third with 87 points, which was slightly behind TC Roberson (69) and Watauga (72).
The Mavs were led by Kaitlyn Cole (20:04, eighth) and got scoring runs from Delaney Caulder (20:16, 10th), freshman Brynn Hennessey (20:47, 17th), Sarah Curdy (20:51, 10th) and Kaylee Spencer (21:31, 33rd).
In the NCISAA 3A meet held Oct. 27 at WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, Metrolina Christian placed 10th.
Eighth-grader Alli Flannery ran 20:21 to finish 15th and lead the Warriors. Flannery’s time is the fourth-fastest in the state for an eighth-grader.
The Warriors also got scoring runs from seventh-graders Taylor Dixon (21:25, 45th), which was the second-fastest time in the state for a seventh-grader, and Reagan Pruitt (22:32, 61st). Senior Makenna Judy (22:33, 62nd) and freshman Delaney Murphy (23:09, 75th) rounded out the scoring.
