KERNERSVILLE – Weddington High juniors Kyle Durham and Will Mazur stole the show for Union County runners at the NCHSAA 3A cross country championship, which concluded Nov. 4 at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex, while helping Weddington finish second in the state.
Durham, who holds the eighth-fastest time for a junior in the state, finished in 16 minutes, 02.24 seconds to place seventh. Durham edged Mazur who finished in 16:02.94, which was ninth in the state, a new personal best and the 15th-fastest time run by a junior in the state this year.
The Warriors’ other scoring runs came from juniors Jackson O’Hara (16:31, 23rd) and Stephen Larson (16:31, 24th) and sophomore Jake Toomey (17:18, 73rd).
Larson was also named a recipient of the NCHSAA Sportsmanship Award.
Piedmont’s John Ciprich missed a top nine finish by under a half of a second, but took 11th overall with a run of 16:06.
The Panthers other top runners included Chandler Jones (16:46, 35th), Lucas Paschal (16:52, 42nd), Nicholas Mullis (17:29, 91st) and Sam Doejaaren (18:53, 186th).
Cuthbertson senior Andrew Kiss placed 15th overall with a time of 16:19. Kiss was joined in the top five scoring runners by Cav teammates Davis Seik (16:50, 39th), Walker Lezotte (17:02, 54th), Daniel Chavez (17:18, 75) and freshman Evan Zottl (17:22, 82nd). Cavs freshman William Walsh just missed placing, and finished 86th (17:24).
Marvin Ridge was paced by freshman Cole Jackson, who placed 60th after crossing the finish line in 17:08.
The Mavs were also represented by junior James Bryant (17:12, 66th) and sophomores Myles Carnohan (17:19, 76th), Sahil Bhave (17:21, 81st) and Jackson Colling (17:32, 96th), who edged junior Noah Bowman (17:33, 99th) by under a second for the final scoring spot.
Mount Tabor’s Cameron Ponder won the individual title with a time of 15:19, which ranks fifth in the state and No. 1 in North Carolina among 3A runners.
Mount Tabor won the team competition with 72 points and was followed by Southern Carolinas Conference schools Weddington (110, second), Cuthbertson (215, sixth), Marvin Ridge (301, 10th), Piedmont (306, 11th) and Charlotte Catholic (316, 12th).
In the Class 4A meet, Cameron Belk represented Porter Ridge and finished 74th overall with a run of 17:02. The Pirates didn’t have any other boy runners and didn’t qualify as a team.
