With its 16-0 win over Sun Valley last week, Porter Ridge claimed a share of the Southern Carolina 3A/4A title for the fourth consecutive season, tying the Spartans and Weddington for the crown.
The Pirates received a spark from JV call-up quarterback Isaiah Hicklin, who rotated into the game with Zach Danielson, who is nursing a broken foot. Hicklin only gained eight yards on six carries but had several well-timed option pitches, which sprang backs Chris Duffy (14 carries for 96 yards) and Jerrick Robbins (15 carries, 150 yards, one touchdown).
“(Hicklin) managed the game and did an excellent job for us,” said Porter Ridge coach Blair Hardin.
The sophomore also passed for 54 yards. Danielson was perfect on five throws for 45 yards.
Punter/kicker/receiver Matt Wogan added four punts for 190 yards, including a key 68-yarder late in the game that pinned the Spartans inside their 20-yard line.’
Defensively, linemen Avery Worsham and Ryan Dilworth each had two sacks (including a fourth-quarter safety by Worsham), while Duffy grabbed an interception.
“Every phase came through,” said Wogan. “It was a team win.”
Hardin, in his fifth season, said the conference title was expected since the Pirates made it a preseason goal.
“That’s huge,” Hardin said. “When you have goals, you want to reach them, and it was good to do that (last week).”
