Monroe takes early lumps

Despite starting the season at No. 1 in Union County Weekly’s preseason Super 7 rankings, the Monroe Redhawks took a convincing 35-13 loss to Porter Ridge in Week 1.

“The places we have concerns, it showed, especially up front (on the offensive line), and it showed early,” said Monroe coach Johnny Sowell. “We have to get better to do the things we want to do (offensively).”

Sowell did see some bright spots in the loss, especially late in the game as the Redhawks finally were able to string together some drives and scored 13 fourth-quarter points.

“We showed at the end we still have some fight. We didn’t quit,” said Sowell. “You’ll see a different (Monroe) team next week.”

Monroe travels to Concord Robinson on Friday. Aug. 24.
