While having a suffocating defense is nice, Weddington’s greatest attribute might be a demeanor that coach Tim Carson called “business-like” and “even-keeled.” That attitude paid off as the Warriors beat Cuthbertson, 38-21, after the season opener was delayed a day because of heavy rains.
Weddington running back Gavin Black rushed for 207 yards and two scores. Carson also said the defense, led by linebacker Heath Moore and safety Billy Ryan, excelled at limiting the Cavs’ big-play ability.
Cuthbertson receiver Emmitt Afam had eight catches for 164 yards and a pair of scores, but the rest of the Cavs offense was limited to 33 yards receiving and 98 rushing.
Weddington visits Forest Hills on Friday, Aug. 24.
