On May 1, the Marvin Ridge boys and girls track and field teams swept the Southern Carolina 3A/4A titles at the conference meet at Weddington.
In the girls meet, several Mavs picked up wins, including Taylor Berry, who won the 200-meter dash in 26.10 seconds; Ailish Dwyer, whose time in the 800 (2 minutes, 24.80 seconds) was good for first; Sarah Fell, who cleared 11 feet in the pole vault; and Bria Soto, whose effort of 32 feet, 10 inches was good for gold. The Mavs also won titles in the 4×100, the 4×200 and the 4×400 relays.
Weddington received winning performances from Brianna Hood, who won the 100 (13.10); Mallary Price, who won both the 1,600 (5:19.80) and the 3,200 (12:15.30); and Nicole Gaylord, who cleared 4-8 in the high jump. Weddington also won the 4×800 (10:41.70).
Other winners included Sun Valley’s Rickell Reid, who won the 400 (1:00.80), and Spartan teammate Madison Reasor, who claimed wins in the 100-meter hurdles (16.50) and the 300 hurdles (50.0). Porter Ridge’s Whitney Heins won the long jump (16-0), while fellow Pirate Jaleea Cunningham threw the discus 104-4. Parkwood’s Brekeisha Huntley won the shot put (31-11.50).
The Mavs won the team competition with 236.25 points, followed by Weddington (135.25) and Porter Ridge (70). Sun Valley was fourth (48.25) and Parkwood sixth (40.25).
Thanks to a strong showing in the field events, Marvin Ridge (174 points) was able to edge second-place Weddington (153) and third-place Porter Ridge (127) in the boys meet. Mav Ronny Franklin cleared 12-6 to win the pole vault, while Alex Penner won the triple jump (40-0) and Matt Townsend claimed gold in the discus (130-7). The Mavs also notched wins in the 800 (Alec Lane, 2:03), the 1,600 (Drew Buckley, 4:26.90) and the 4×200 relay (1:33).
Weddington was paced by wins in the 4×400 (3:30.20) and the 4×800 (8:31.10). Warrior Cole Finch added wins in the high jump (6-8) and the long jump (21-8.5), and teammate Matt Burns earned a victory in the 3,200 (10:38.40). Porter Ridge had several individual wins, including Casey Hardison, who won the 100 in 11.40; Lee McNeill, who won the 200 (22.50); Ryan Hastings, who grabbed gold in the 400 (50.60) and Zach Scarboro, who won the 110 hurdles (14.90) and the 300 hurdles (40.70).
The Pirates also won the 4×100 relay (44.0). Parkwood’s Matthew Brantley earned a win in the shot put (49-2).
Sun Valley placed fourth with 53 points, followed by Anson (39) and Parkwood (21).
