Weddington’s Jones, Monroe’s Chambers earn honors

On Thursday, Dec. 8, the Charlotte Touchdown Club recognized a pair of Union County high school football players for their performances during the 2011 season.

Buck Jones, a linebacker and defensive end for the Weddington Warriors, was named the 2011 Donnie Shell High School Defensive Player of the Year. The senior recorded 101 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 19 quarterback pressures, six sacks and a fumble recovery. Off the field, Jones boasts a 4.52 GPA and was named an N.C. High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete in each of his four years of high school.

Monroe’s Quayshawn Chambers earned the Charlotte Touchdown Club’s 2011 High School Comeback Player of the Year award. Chambers, a junior, fractured his ankle in the first game of the 2010 campaign but returned this season to lead the Redhawks to a 10-4 record and third-round appearance in the Class 1AA playoffs. Chambers threw for 1,776 yards and 22 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,221 yards and 16 scores.

Both Jones and Chambers will receive their awards at the Bronco Nagurski Awards Banquet, Dec. 12 at uptown Charlotte’s Westin Hotel.

The Charlotte Touchdown Club is a non-profit organization aimed at promoting high school, college and professional football in the Charlotte region.

Weddington Titans earn regional title

On Nov. 26, the Weddington Titans, representing the Wesley Chapel Weddington Athletic Association, captured the Pop Warner MidSouth Junior Pee Wee Regional Championship. The Titans beat the Wilmington Colts, 29-0, to earn the crown.

The Titans, coached by Pete Case, recorded a 5-0 mark in the regular season and won the Weddington Optimist Bowl with a 4-0 playoff record. The Titans then moved to regional play, where they tallied a perfect 3-0 mark. In all, the Titans were 12-0 and outscored their opponents by a total of 363-6.

QCAA to hold AAU hoops tryouts

The Queen City Athletic Association will hold the first of three AAU boys basketball tryouts on Sunday, Dec. 11, at Charlotte’s Kennedy Charter School, located at 1717 Sharon Road West.

Tryouts for the fourth-grade team are 1 to 2:30 p.m.; fifth-grade tryouts 2:30 to 4 p.m.; sixth-grade tryouts are 4 to 5:30 p.m.; and the seventh-grade tryouts are 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The other two rounds of tryouts will be in January.
