The Class 1A and 2A state track and field championships will be held this weekend at Greensboro’s N.C. A&T State University. Class 1A will take place Friday, May 20, while the 2A meet will be the following day.
The Monroe boys team will participate in six 1A events. Jalen Sowell qualified for the 100-meter dash, while Eric Horne will compete in the shot put and the discus. The Redhawks’ 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relays also qualified.
Union Academy’s Shane Harrington qualified in the 300 hurdles, and Central Academy’s Leah Johnson will participate in the long jump in the girls meet.
In 2A action, Cuthbertson’s girls qualifiers include Raven Covington (100 and long jump), Justine Neville (100 hurdles and 300 hurdles), Liz Wood (pole vault), Haley Thoms (pole vault) and Valerie Afam (long jump and triple jump). The Cavs’ 4×100 and 4×200 relays also qualified.
Piedmont’s qualifiers are Shenize Allen (400), Ashlann Barbee (800), Karina McAllister (800) and Amanda Hinson (3,200). The Panthers’ 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams also will make the trip, as will Forest Hills’ Kinya Adams (200).
Forest Hills’ boys athlete Brandon Glenn qualified in both the long jump and the triple jump and will be joined by teammate Devontez Leak (300 hurdles). The Yellowjackets will also send their 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams.
Cuthbertson’s Matt Russell (400) and Darion Horner (3,200) will join the Cavs’ 4×200 and 4×800 relay teams in Greensboro, while Piedmont will send pole vaulters David Clouse and Zach Cruze, along with the Panthers’ 4×800 relay team.
