Marvin Ridge’s boys and girls track and field teams each won their portions of the Chick-Fil-A Wesley Chapel Union County Public Schools Championships, April 9 at Cuthbertson High School. Behind a dominating performance in the distance events, the Mavericks outscored second-place Weddington, 166-117. Michael Colven followed up his winning time of 2 minutes, 1.72 seconds in the 800-meter run with a victory in the 1,600 (4:32.4). Fellow Maverick Chris Colo added a win in the 3,200 (9:42.62). Colven also anchored the quartet of Logan Jackson, Will Cottrell and Alec Lane to win the 4×400 relay in 3:30.40, while Colo led the Mavericks’ winning 4×800 relay (8:33.46), along with Cottrell, Lane and Chris Van Gurp. Teammate Edmond Duvall added a win in the 110 hurdles (15.2 seconds) while Ronny Franklin won the pole vault (13 feet).
Weddington was next with four wins. Brandon Little won both the 100 (11.28) and the 200 (23.18) and Michael Pedemonte added a gold in the 500 (50.23). Cole Finch’s effort of 6 feet, 6 inches in the high jump also was good for a win. Forest Hills jumper Brandon Glenn claimed first place in the triple jump (40-11.5) and the long jump (20-3.75), while Parkwood’s Matthew Brantley won both the shot put (49-7) and the discus (118-9). Porter Ridge’s Zach Scarboro added a win in the 300 hurdles (42.99). Porter Ridge also finished first in the 4×100 (44.72) and Forest Hills took gold in the 4×200 (1:31.93).
Forest Hills finished third with 107 points, followed by Porter Ridge (91) and Cuthbertson (62.5).
The girls meet was much closer, as the Mavericks edged Cuthbertson, 155-147. Monroe’s Jamie Glenn and Cuthbertson’s Justine Neville each won a pair of individual events; Glenn won the triple jump (36-10) and the shot put (31-8.5) while Neville was tops in the 100 hurdles (16.02) and the 300 hurdles (48.35). In all, Weddington had four individual winners, including Brianna Hood, who won the 200 (26.41); Carly Griffith, who won the 800 (2:31.12); Chelsea Matson, who won the 1,600 (5:26.94); and Mallary Price, who won the 3,200 (11:46.76). Cuthbertson received three first-place efforts, including Raven Covington, who won the 100 (12.67); Deja Burks, who won the high jump (4-8); and Valerie Afam, who won the long jump (16-3.5). Monroe’s Chyane Elliott won the discus (83-3.5) while Marvin Ridge’s Sarah Fell claimed first in the pole vault (9-00). Piedmont’s Shinese Allen added a win in the 400 (1:00.31).
A different team won each relay event, including Cuthbertson, who won the 4×100 (50.69); Monroe, who won the 4×200 (1:47.57); Marvin Ridge, who won the 4×400 (4:12.89); and Weddington, who won the 4×800 (10:22).
Weddington was third with 124.5, follwed by Monroe (118.5) and Piedmont (40.5).
