After a strong winter sports season, the Marvin Ridge Mavericks are beginning to pull away with the Southern Carolina 3A/4A conference’s Wachovia Conference Cup.
Marvin Ridge swept both the boys and girls swimming titles and recorded a third-place finish in wrestling to jump out to a strong lead with 557.5 points. Weddington, which notched runner-up finishes in girls swimming and wrestling, is in second place with 492.5 points, ahead of Sun Valley (473), which jumped to third place after claiming titles in boys basketball and wrestling. Porter Ridge (460), Parkwood (370) and Anson Senior (259.5) round out the conference.
In the Rocky River 1A/2A conference, Cuthbertson claimed a title in girls swimming and finished second in boys basketball to earn a slim lead over Piedmont, 78-77. The Panthers charged up the rankings with several strong performances; they finished first in wrestling and recorded second-place efforts in boys and girls swimming and girls basketball. West Stanly (65.5) is in third, followed by Central Academy (60.5), Charlotte Berry (48), North Stanly (45), Monroe (39.5), Forest Hills (37.5) and Union Academy (37).
The Wachovia Conference Cup is awarded to schools with the best performance within each of the state’s individual conferences and is a companion to the Wachovia Cup, which is sponsored by Wachovia and the N.C. High School Athletic Association. The Wachovia Cup recognizes the top overall athletic performances within each of the state’s four classifications.
