Cuthbertson High hosted a seven-team track and field meet on March 23, and the Cavs’ boys and girls squads each came out on top.
In the girls competition, Justine Neville won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.7 seconds and followed that up with a win in the 300 hurdles (47.1). Neville then joined Deb Guthmann, Megan Kiss and Rachel Miller to win the 4×800 relay in 11 minutes, 25 seconds. Morgan Carlson, a high jumper, cleared 4 feet, 6 inches to take gold. Teammate Liz Wood also earned a win with an effort of 7-6 in the pole vault. Valerie Afam, a UNC Wilmington recruit, set a personal record of 18 feet in the long jump.
The Cavs outscored second-place Monroe, 195-130. Sun Valley and Piedmont tied for third place with 76 points, followed by Charlotte Independence (52) and Central Academy (11).
On the boys side, Cuthbertson’s Matt Russell claimed gold in the 100 (11.0) and the 400 (51.4) before joining Emmitt Afam, DeMarco Singleton and John Lewthwaite to win the 4×100 relay in 45 seconds. Afam and Lewthwaite also joined Jordan Hardrick-Givens and Austin Seibert to claim the top spot in the 4×200 relay (1:34.80). Fellow Cav Sal D’Angelo’s 11-foot effort in the pole vault also was good for a win.
Cuthbertson’s boys finished with 146 points, followed by Charlotte Independence (121), Piedmont (112), Monroe (70), Sun Valley (68) and Central Academy (34).
