Despite three individual wins by Weddington swimmers, Marvin Ridge High’s boys and girls swimming and diving teams finished tops among Union County squads at the Class 3A state championships Feb. 12 at Cary’s Triangle Aquatic Center.
The Mavericks’ girls team finished second to Charlotte Catholic, 417-296. Weddington finished seventh with 109 points. In the boys competition, Marvin Ridge finished fifth (149), while the Warriors took 20th place.
Weddington’s Katherine Plevka concluded an impressive career with a pair of individual wins. She took gold in the girls 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 5.43 seconds) and the 100 breaststroke (1:06.81).
Marvin Ridge also had a slew of impressive performances, highlighted by its relay teams. Miranda McGaha, Maggie Glanton, Lauren Greenburg and Michelle Lester teamed to finish second in the 200 medley relay (1:52.22), while McGaha, Maggie Glanton, Jacqueline Pennington and Greenburg completed the 400 freestyle relay in 3:41.65, good for third. Lester, Jayne Glanton, Stefanie Cage and Cara Edwards completed the 200 freestyle relay with a fifth-place time of 1:44.08.
Greenburg also claimed bronze in the 200 freestyle (1:53.18) and silver in the 500 freestyle (5:03.86). In the 100 freestyle, McGaha finished fourth (56.02 seconds) and was immediately followed by Maggie Glanton (56.05), who also scored a fifth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.43).
Weddington’s Maria Polizzi (272.45 points) and Marvin Ridge’s Shelby Raines (265.35) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the diving competition.
Alex Biehl was Weddington’s other individual winner, finishing the 50 free in 21.80. Biehl also finished second in the 100 butterfly (51.86). Marvin Ridge’s Evan White (54.08) took fourth in the same event. Maverick Lane Bretschneider captured third in the 200 individual medley (1:59.42) and later joined White, McKee Christiansen and Kyle Shirley to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.12).
In the Class 1A/2A meet, held Feb. 10 in Rock Hill, S.C., Cuthbertson’s Elle Grier claimed a pair of top-five finishes, taking fifth in the 200 IM (21:19.34) and fourth in the 500 free (5:25.12).
