Marvin Ridge concluded the winter track season with a pair of second-place finishes at the Class 1A/2A/3A winter track state championships at Fayetteville’s Reid Ross Classical School last weekend.
The Mavericks 4×800-meter relay team of Michael Colven, Drew Buckley, Alec Lane and Chris Van Gurp took gold with a time of 8 minutes, 28.56 seconds. Teammate Chris Colo registered a second-place time of 10:02.43 in the 3,200 and was edged by Weddington’s Jonathan Bivens (4:35.08) in the 1,600 by .04 of a second for third place.
Colven (2:41.18) took fifth in the 1,000, while Weddington teammates Michael Pedemonte (1:07.60) and Will Chambers (1:08.01) took second and fourth, respectively, in the 500. Brandon Little claimed fourth in the 300 in 35.84 seconds and teamed with Chambers, Michael Pedemonte and Matt Pedemonte to finish fourth in the 4×400 (3:37.25). Piedmont’s David Clouse cleared 11 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault to earn fourth place, while Marvin Ridge’s Matt Townsend’s 44-4 effort in the shot put secured fifth place.
As a team, Marvin Ridge (39 points) finished second, and Weddington was fifth (33).
In the girls competition, the county had a pair of top-finishing relay teams: Taylor Dove, Anna Lipocky, Brittany Fritz and Taylor Berry propelled Marvin Ridge’s 4×400 relay in 4:17.13, while Weddington’s quartet of Mallary Price, Carly Griffith, Shannon Martin and Chelsea Matson claimed gold in the 4×800 (10:02.05).
Martin also finished fifth in the 1,000 and teamed with Taylor Arrowood, Brook Austin and Griffith to take third in the 4×400 (4:20.35). Marvin Ridge’s Fritz teamed with Ailish Dwyer, Caitlyn Colo and Alden Kessenich to finish as runners-up in the 4×800 (10:16.64). Monroe’s Janieyah Collins finished third in the 55 hurdles (8.72), while Weddington’s Price took bronze in the 3,200 (11:48.05).
Maverick Taylor Berry finished fifth in the 500 (1:22.48). In the field events, Marvin Ridge teammates Sarah Fell (9-06) and Hannah Frederick (9-00) finished fourth and fifth in the pole vault, respectively, while Cuthbertson’s Raven Covington cleared 16-11.25 in the long jump, good for second. Valeria Afam’s distance of 34-10.5 in the triple jump took fifth place.
Marvin Ridge edged third-place Weddington, 34-33. Cuthbertson (12) finished 15th, followed by Monroe (10) in 19th place.
