The Rocky River 1A/2A and the Southern Carolina 3A/4A conference wrestling tournaments were held on Feb. 5, and several Union County wrestlers brought home individual titles.
In the Rocky River tournament, held at Cuthbertson High School, Piedmont’s Stephen Ivey, a 125-pounder, took home Most Outstanding Wrestler honors. Joining Ivey with conference championships were teammates Kirby Haigler (103 pounds), Alex Turner (135), Steven Bunch (140), Parker Von Egidy (152), Dillon Nelson (160) and Neal Thomas (171).
Central Academy was next with three winners: Daniel Greorovich (112), Quinton Plyler (215) and Will Robinson (285).
Cuthbertson had a pair of winners in Cody Walker (119) and Cory Check (145).
Monroe’s Zack Cooper advanced to the finals of the 130-pound division but was bested by West Stanly’s Tanner Allen, 7-5.
Piedmont won the team championship trophy with 225 points, followed by Central Academy (188.5) and Cuthbertson (150.5). Monroe (39.5), Union Academy (25) and Forest Hills (17) placed seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.
In Southern Carolina 3A/4A action, Sun Valley claimed the team championship, beating out Marvin Ridge, Weddington and Porter Ridge.
Despite finishing second in the team standings, Marvin Ridge led the way with six individual winners, including 103-punder Josh Younis, Royce Rammer (112), Stuart Todd (119), Nat Napoleone (130), Chad Mullens (140) and Nathan Mullens (145).
Sun Valley had a trio of conference champs in Alex Alvarado (125), Ryan Henson (135) and Eddie Kelley (285).
Weddington’s Joe Centrella (171) and teammate Jake Perkins (215) also won titles, as did Parkwood’s Austin Craig (160).
Centrella was named the conference’s Wrestler of the Year. Sun Valley’s Sean Greiner earned Coach of the Year honors.
