Starting with a Jan. 21 matchup between Sun Valley (11-5) and Weddington (17-1), the next week will go a long way in determining the boys race in the Southern Carolina 3A/4A conference race.
The Warriors currently have a 4-0 conference mark but will be tested by the Spartans (3-1) and the Marvin Ridge Mavericks (9-5, 2-1), who tip off against Weddington on Jan. 25.
In Rocky River 1A/2A conference action, the Cuthbertson Cavaliers (10-5, 6-2) picked up a big 56-50 win over Monroe (8-5, 5-2) on Jan. 18, bringing the Cavaliers within a half-game of Forest Hills (7-8, 6-3), which currently sits in second place in the conference behind Charlotte Berry (11-2, 6-0).
In girls action, the Parkwood Rebels surrendered first place in the Southern Carolina 3A/4A conference after an 81-64 loss to Porter Ridge on Jan. 18. The Pirates, who sport identical overall and conference records as the Rebels (14-2, 3-1, respectively) have won eight of their last nine and are in sole possession of first place, thanks to the head-to-head tie breaker. Parkwood can make strides in re-earning their first-place position with a Jan. 21 trip to Marvin Ridge (10-5, 1-2) and a Jan. 22 visit from Sun Valley (9-8, 3-1).
In Rocky River 1A/2A girls action, the Monroe Redhawks have won five of their last six games to improve to 9-4 overall and 6-1 in league action, currently good for second place. Piedmont is close behind at 8-4, 5-2. Monroe travels to Parkwood on Jan. 22 before hosting North Stanly on Jan. 25. Piedmont visits West Stanly on Jan. 22 before hosting league-leader Charlotte Berry (12-1, 6-0) on Jan. 25.
