On Nov. 12, Cuthbertson High’s athletic department held the first-ever signing day ceremony for the second-year school.
Baseball players Preston Morrison and Peter Hendel each signed National Letters of Intent to continue their careers in college. Morrison will attend Texas Christian University, while Hendel signed to play at the University of North Carolina. Together, the duo helped the Cavaliers to a 23-4 record and a third-round playoff appearance in 2010.
Mavericks, Colo finish second at state cross country meet
On Nov. 6, Marvin Ridge runner Chris Colo capped an illustrious cross country career with a second-place finish at the Class 3A state meet at Kernersville’s Beeson Park.
Colo, a senior, led all Union County runners with a time of 15 minutes, 30.33 seconds.
As a team, Marvin Ridge finished with 121 points, good for second behind Chapel Hill (39 points). Fellow Maverick Michael Colven finished 15th (16:32.94). Weddington’s Jonathan Bivens also fared well, finishing 13th (16:29.12).
In the girls race, Weddington captured fifth behind strong performances from 12th-place finisher Chelsea Matson (19:39.53) and Mallary Price (17th place in 19:47.53).
Metrolina’s Carpenter earns honor
Metrolina Christian Academy volleyball player Cassi Carpenter was named to the 2010 All-Metrolina Athletic Conference squad.
Others members of the All-MAC volleyball team include Taylor Anderson (Hickory Grove), Meghan Bentley (SouthLake Christian), Nicole Karlesky (Hickory Grove), Sarah McClure (Northside Christian), Shelby Nassar (Covenant Day), Meredith Peacock (Hickory Grove), Kathryne Perrill (Westminster Catawba), Katie Schoenrock (SouthLake Christian), Bailey Stewart (Covenant Day), Kayla Sumner (SouthLake Christian), Erin Taylor (Concord First Assembly), Leah Villarreal (Covenant Day) and Abby Wyman (Covenant Day).
