The Marvin Ridge High School girls tennis team completed its regular season on Oct. 6 with an 8-1 win over rival Weddington. The Mavericks improved to 14-1 overall and 7-0 in the Southern Carolina 3A/4A conference.
Marvin Ridge’s singles winners included Reeree Li (1-0, retired over Jasmine Gabriel), Paige Nestor (6-2, 6-4 over Kindel Schmidt), Hannah Florian (6-4, 6-2 over Casey Rowe), Minali Nigam (6-3, 6-3 over Emma Yates) and Hannah Farley (6-3, 7-6, 7-3 over Katie Gutt).
The Mavericks also swept the doubles portion. Weddington’s Sarah Carroll beat Mariel Emery 6-2, 6-4 for the Warriors’ lone win.
Marvin Ridge coach Michael Watson said the victory was helpful not only for state tournament seeding but momentum as well.
“Whenever you win the conference, that puts you in a better position going into the tournament,” said Watson. “It’s always nice to have a good win like that to gain confidence going into the postseason. The girls were really excited to play well and finish off. Weddington’s a great team, so it’s always nice to beat a good team like they are.”
The first round of the Class 3A dual-team state tournament begins Oct. 19. Seedings will be announced once all teams have finished regular-season play.
