INDIAN TRAIL– Common Heart is seeking donations to provide 1,000 frozen turkeys with all the fixin’s to families in need so they can prepare their own Thanksgiving feasts.
Residents can drop off frozen turkeys and other nonperishables for the 12th annual Great Turkey Countdown from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, as well as 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Common Things Thrift Store, 321 Indian Trail Road N. Donations may include canned green beans, corn and fruit cocktail, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce and gravy.
Residents wishing to donate large amounts of nonperishables or frozen turkeys should email Turkeys@Com monHeart.org to make an appointment for drop off at the Common Cupboard food pantry in Indian Trail.
Cash donations are also being accepted. Every $30 raised buys a turkey and the fixin’s. Visit http://Tur keys.CommonHeart.org to donate online.
The charity needs volunteers to pack nonperishables Nov. 10 to 12 and Nov. 16 ahead of delivery day at the Common Cupboard food pantry on Nov. 17. Volunteers can sign up at http://Turkeys.CommonHeart.org.
Baskets will benefit families throughout Union County, Matthews and Mint Hill. Any family in need who lives in these areas can apply online by Nov. 1 to receive a turkey basket at http://Turkeys.CommonHeart.org.
This all-hands-on-deck volunteer event is the Cupboard’s biggest delivery day, Executive Director Keith Adams said.
“When we started this Thanksgiving program 11 years ago, we gave away just over 100 Thanksgiving baskets,” he said. “The effort – thanks to the community’s generosity – has grown steadily since then, and this year we hope we can serve 1,000 families.”
