MONROE – Union County Community Shelter has named George Sarno as chief financial officer.
Prior to leaving The Hearst Corporation in Charlotte for the newly created position, he was deputy director of financial planning, with responsibility of a $300 million capital budget and the overseeing of annual profit and five-year plans with $10 billion in revenue.
“As our non-profit organization has grown in the number of services offered and clients served, our budget has also grown exponentially through the number of grants written and received, full-time and part-time staff, plus fundraising events,” CEO Kathy Bragg said. “We need a strong financial person on site every day. When we move into our new facility, which is being built now, our need for a facilities manager will be even greater.”
The nonprofit operates with a $1.2 million budget and provides services to more than 3,500 residents.
Last year, the shelter provided 10,930 total stays to single adults and families and served 54,591 prepared meals in the soup kitchen.
Over the past five years, the overnight stays totaled 42,948 nights for single adults and 23,794 nights for family members and the soup kitchen served 240,001 meals. Additionally, 484 homeless households were rehoused through shelter services.
