MONROE – In today’s hectic lifestyle of business meetings, traffic jams and just the wear and tear of the everyday routine, it’s understandable why more Americans are searching for ways to cut down on stress.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an abundance of health concerns – including high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes – can occur from continually being in stressful situations.
Tyler Baudoin recognized the need in Union County to slow down and relax and has opened Monroe Massage and Yoga on Franklin Street to help people deal with their stressful lives.
“It helps people feel better and gets them out of pain,” Baudoin said.
It’s been that way for Baudoin ever since he visited South Piedmont Community College. He was always interested in getting into physical therapy, but after participating in a chair massage session at SPCC, Baudoin was hooked.
After graduating from Union Academy in 2011, he enrolled at SPCC and took classes on massage therapy. Baudoin knew an important part of having a successful massage business was building up clients, so he worked at Hand and Stone and Massage Envy, for several years. He also built his base by going to different companies around the area and giving chair massage to employees.
“It’s kind of cool on how to see the area, and get a scope of the people who lived there,” Baudoin said. “… It also helped me learn different techniques from people who would teach me and different ideas.”
Baudoin still felt the need to improve on his massage style. Along with his wife, Baudoin moved to Asheville, where he continued to work at a variety of places. He also began to add yoga into his repertoire of ways to relax. It was also in Asheville where he really started to learn the business aspects of massage.
When he returned back to Monroe this past year to open his business, he made communicating with clients in a variety of ways an important part of his plan. He hired a marketing group which took to social media by tracking the amount of traffic that would visit Baudoin’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.
“I never really liked it from the social aspect,” Baudoin said of social media. “… Now I get it. It’s a great way to keep up with other people’s lives. But I see it as a platform from a marketing standpoint.”
The attention he gets on social media has paid off. Baudoin said he performs three to five massages each day. He also leads about seven people in two to five yoga sessions each week. The reason he has small groups is to help accommodate his business area. Monroe Massage and Yoga is in what used to be in the storage area of Better Car People. Baudoin said he is hoping to expand when Better Car People moves. When that occurs, Baudoin plans on taking over the front part of the building, allowing him to have bigger yoga classes, and the possibility of starting couple massages.
“It adds a little more advertising sector,” Baudoin said. “People don’t see me from the street, so it will help tremendously to have that open space.”
The end result is making sure people in Union County slow down and breathe.
“I really want to stress (healthy living) on them because I know how important it is, “Baudoin said. “But I also want them to be ready in their own minds… I want to be there for them and make that transition as easy as possible into that healthy lifestyle.”
