INDIAN TRAIL – Volunteers with the Common Heart filed 527 income tax returns for free.
The service, which saw a record number of residents for the second year in a row, netted nearly $500,000 in total refunds.
Volunteers also processed 33 tax returns from previous filing years. An additional 64 Union County residents filed their own taxes for free online using the My Free Taxes website.
“Our free tax service helps take the stress out of tax time and allows our hard-working neighbors to use the money they save on tax preparation fees for other needs, like food, rent or medical bills,” Executive Director Keith Adams said. “We serve people from all walks of life – college students, teachers, hair stylists, retail staff, local government employees and retirees.”
Community Link provided appointment scheduling, training and equipment.
Greeters and tax preparers are needed for next year. Email Susan.Ochs@CommonHeart.org for details.
