MONROE – Gloria Haney, director of the Union County Christmas Bureau, described this year’s three-day distribution of gifts as a great success.
The bureau is a collaboration of county agencies and serves as a clearinghouse to help prevent duplication of assistance. It relies on monetary, toy and gift donations and family sponsorships.
The Monroe Kiwanis Club helped ensure each family received food for the Christmas season. They coordinated with Union County Public Schools to have food drives at schools.
Volunteers helped package the donations. Donors provided gifts to almost 1,900 families that applied for Christmas assistance.
More than 250 families received Christmas assistance from sponsors that donated specific gifts tailored for them. Forty-five organizations or groups sponsored gift trees for more than 500 of the children.
Major sponsors included Spivey Insurance, McGee Corporation, Tyson Foods, Walmart Foundation and Marine Corps Toys for Tots in Monroe.
