MONROE – The Union County Board of Elections will conduct election recounts for the Waxhaw commission race, as well as Marvin mayor and council races.
Union County’s election board is holding a recount due to the small number of votes separating candidates in three races, according to Director John Whitley.
Marc Curtis needed nine votes to surpass Kimberly Vandenberg for the second and final seat on the Marvin Village Council. Anne Simpson was 19 votes shy of surpassing Tracy Wesolek to become a Waxhaw commissioner.
The Marvin mayor race was an extraordinary case, in which unopposed Mayor Joe Pollino tallied 446 votes. Write-ins received 421 votes. Heather Danenberg tallied 401 of those write-in votes.
State law allows election boards to hold discretionary recounts.
The recount will take place at noon Nov. 14 at the board of elections office 316-B E. Windsor St.
The elections board will conduct the canvass at 11 a.m. Nov. 17. That day, they’ll count any valid postmarked absentee or provisional ballots.
