‘Livening’ up Lake Park

LAKE PARK – Central Academy at Lake Park and Central Church of God will unite this weekend in an effort to reach out to Lake Park and its surrounding communities.

The inaugural Lake Park Live! will take place Saturday, Aug. 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Gazebo Park, which is located at 4019 Lake Charles Way. The arts-based festival will feature live music, food trucks, local artisans and vendors, activities for kids, martial arts demonstrations, dance performances, church presentations and more.

Lake Park Live! has been in the works since April, according to Dr. Mildred Similton, Central Academy’s college guidance director.

“Our primary objective is we want to be more involved in the community, as a church and as a school,” Similton said.

School and church leaders chose to organize an arts festival to bring attention to the fine arts programs offered at Central Academy including a spring stage production, a kindergarten-through-fifth-grade choir and band for middle and high school students.

Leaders also wanted to offer the community a different type of festival Similton said is not common to this area.

“One of the things that hasn’t been done is (a festival) to center around music and art,” Similton said, adding the festival will help raise funds for Central Academy’s fine arts program in addition to bringing awareness to the school’s programs. “(But) raising funds is secondary to our desire to build community in the Lake Park area.”

Central Academy’s partner, the Charlotte-based Central Church of God, hopes the festival will draw attention to its satellite campus, which meets on Sundays and Wednesdays at Central Academy and serves a congregation of about 400 people.

“I hope what it will do is help the neighbors, community members, be aware that (the church is) here … the (main campus) is 30 minutes away from the school, but the church still wants to be an integral part of the school,” Similton said.

Similton said the festival also will provide school supplies to families living in a nearby apartment complex. Find more information including details about Central Academy and Central Church’s Lake Park campus at www.centralacademyatlakepark.org. The school is located at 3624 Lake Park Road.
