WAXHAW – A new franchise with multiple locations across the country is growing again and setting roots in Waxhaw.
Tia Davis recently opened Nothing Bundt Cakes at 9704 Rea Road, and business is going great, she said. The shop serves exactly what the name implies – nothing but Bundt cakes – which are covered in frosting to resemble a sunflower.
“I’ve been blessed for these eight days,” Davis said of her short time in business so far. “We have 11 flavors and every flavor is delicious. We are not the typical bakery.”
Davis watched her husband, Jim, manage his own three business for years. So when the couple’s children grew up, she decided it was time to try her hand at running her own business – with the help of her husband as secretary and treasurer.
“I was told about this bakery and the business…” Davis said. After researching the company and interviewing with the corporate office in Dallas, Texas, she was sold. “I just fell in love with (the business),” she said.
The shop doesn’t sell traditional bakery items such as cookies, cupcakes or bread and concentrates on producing Bundt cakes of all sizes that can be given as gifts. All of the cakes are handmade from scratch, using fresh ingredients. “We have the most delicious cakes you will ever taste,” Davis promised.
Opening the business took some effort, Davis admitted. She had to go through several weeks of phone interviews so the company could determine if she was a good fit for their business, followed by a month-long training session before being allowed to open her own spop. Davis learned to do everything involved with the business – from baking and frosting the cakes to how to run the financial side of things. The training proved to be the hardest part, so far.
“I left my family for a month and spent that month learning how to do everything,” Davis said.
But the hard work and sacrifices were well worth it, she said, because she’s passionate about Nothing Bundt Cakes. She loves being able to talk with her customers and get to know them, in addition to working beside her husband every day.
“I want to be here from open to close,” Davis said. “I’m already starting the process of training shift leaders. You don’t want to leave, but you have to.”
Her dedication has paid off in the early going, as business is booming and Davis has already been approved to open a second Nothing Bundt Cakes. She plans on searching for the perfect location before settling down in a new spot.
“Our goal is to have two to three bakeries in Charlotte,” she said.
