Local communities fighting crime

WAXHAW – Communities all over the United States are preparing for National Night Out, America’s Night Out Against Crime to get to know local law enforcement and discuss ways to decrease crime.

Three town-sponsored events are taking place in western Union County, and local law enforcement officers hope community members take the time to come out and meet the people who have sworn to protect and serve the community.  Each event will include multiple demonstrations and activities.

“The main emphasis on National Night Out is for the community to get to know the officers and the officers to get to know the community and to help with crime prevention,” Lt. Burton Zill with the Waxhaw Police Department said.

Subdivisions in Waxhaw have participated in National Night Out by hosting individual events for more than 10 years, but this year will be the first town-wide event, with the Waxhaw Police Department and Waxhaw Fire Department holding demonstrations and activities for all ages.

Police officers hope the event will give residents in Waxhaw a chance to get to know them and become more comfortable  looking to the department for assistance.

“Waxhaw relatively has a low crime rate as it is, but some of the benefits (of National Night Out) is once the community becomes familiar with the officers it makes them more comfortable to talk to the officers,” Zill said.

Town leaders and law enforcement officers throughout the county encourage residents to come out, get involved and learn more about fighting crime in their neighborhoods.
