New Salem Baptist to celebrate sesquicentennial

MONROE – Now in its 150th year, New Salem Baptist Church will hold a sesquicentennial celebration on Aug. 26, a Sunday, at 10:30 a.m.

In 1862, a group of people gathered under a brush of arbor and started what would become New Salem Baptist Church. For the celebration, current members, former members and visitors all are invited to take part in this celebration, which will feature music, food, members dressed in 1800s attire and a display of photos, letters and other memorabilia.

The event also kicks of the church’s revival services, which take place Aug. 27, a Monday, through Aug. 30, a Thursday, at 7 p.m. each night.
