Hearing gives residents shot at development project

WEDDINGTON – Locals will get a chance next week to learn more about a planned development coming to town.

Centerline Homes hopes to start construction soon on a neighborhood in Weddington that could have around 90 homes on the south side of Weddington-Matthews Road between Antioch Church Road and Cari Lane. Before the town’s planning department starts to discuss the matter, developers will meet with area residents Wednesday night, July 11, to discuss. The meeting is from 6 to 8 p.m. at Weddington town hall, 1924 Weddington Road.

Developers are still in the beginning stages of planning the proposed neighborhood. Although they are yet to meet with the planning committee, officials with knowledge of the proposal expect things to go smoothly.

“It should work; there may be some tweaking, but I certainly don’t think it will be much less than that,” Town Planner Jordan Cook said.

Weddington’s planning board is scheduled to discuss the new 90-home development at their July 23 meeting, but they have not yet received any complaints, according to Cook. “I’ve received a few phone calls but no major concerns,” he said.

If all goes well, Centerline Homes should begin construction on the site in about a year, but if problems or large changes need to be made the time frame could shift. After meeting with the planning committee, there are about four or five more preliminary steps the developers must take before being approved to begin work on the site.

“They are just in the scheduling part right now. Only myself and the zoning board will look over the sketch plan and if that is approved they move onto the other steps of the preliminary process,” Cook said.
