HEMBY BRIDGE – Sandra’s Second Wind will host a golf tournament Sept. 15, a Saturday, to raise money to cover a lung transplant for 52-year-old Sandra Cook of Hemby Bridge. But the organization needs the community’s support to make the event happen.
“In order to prepare for this wonderful event we are in need of hole sponsors, cart sponsors and golfers,” Liz Umholtz, community coordinator for Sandra’s Second Wind, said in an email.
Four years ago, Cook tested positive for Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, a genetic medical condition in which the body doesn’t produce enough of a protein that protects the liver and lungs from damage. A double lung transplant – the only hope for Sandra’s survival – will cost more than $85,000.
Family, friends and community members recently came together to raise $1,729.12 for Sandra’s Second Wind (the organization that collects the money that will be used for Cook’s transplant) through a car wash held at South 21 in Matthews last month. The upcoming golf tournament is the next in a series of community events aimed at supporting Cook and spreading awareness of Alpha 1.
Hole sponsorships cost $100 and cart sponsorships cost $30. Messages with hole sponsors’ business or organization information will be displayed at the designated hole. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor should contact Sharon Eichler at 704-608-0900 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
