The final school board meeting of the 2011-12 year was an emotional one as a number of familiar names in the Union County School System said goodbye. Along with the somber goodbyes a number of people were promoted or reassigned. Those included:
Superintendent Ed Davis, who has worked in the school system for 35 years as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and his current position, thanked the board and his staff for the years of support. He’s served as superintendent for seven years and will step down from the post June 30. Mary Ellis has been chosen as his replacement.
Board of Education Chairman Dean Arp stepped down at Monday’s school board meeting after winning the Republican primary for N.C. House District 69. He said he was stepping down now to allow voters to choose his replacement in November rather than have a board appointment. The school board will vote to replace the chairman position at its July meeting.
Chief Communications Officer Luan Ingram announced she will be retiring her post soon as well. She began working in Union County as an English teacher in 1979 and taught for 13 years before moving into administration. She became an integral part in understanding and underwriting bonds for the school system. She does not have any immediate plans after retiring. Rob Jackson will takeover her responsibilities.
