MONROE — Chick-fil-A of the Monroe Crossing Mall and Gentle Giant Moving Company teamed up June 9 with Move For Hunger to host the first-ever Chick-fil-A Food Drive to benefit Union County families.
To increase donations and participation, Chick-fil-A gave a chicken sandwiches to anyone who donated five or more non-perishable food items to the drive.
At the end of the day more than 700 pounds of food was collected for local food banks – enough food to provide more than 538 meals for local families.
Gentle Giant Moving Company provided the necessary boxes and transportation for the donated items, saving the Union County Homeless Shelter from spending money on trucks and fuel.
Gentle Giant Moving Company is the local affiliate of Move For Hunger, a nonprofit that works with relocation companies to fight hunger. As a partner of Move For Hunger, Gentle Giant offers to pick up any unwanted non-perishables from their clients and deliver it directly to local food banks as well as participate in area food drives and hunger relief events.
“Hunger is not on most people’s minds while they are relaxing on the beach,” said Adam Lowy, executive director of Move For Hunger. “But the truth is that the summer holidays can be an extremely trying time for struggling families. Kids who normally receive free or subsidized lunches are home from school, which puts extra pressure on the supplies of local area food banks. We are so grateful that Chik-Fil-A and our local partner, Gentle Giant Moving Company, were able to work together to make a difference. ”
