INDIAN TRAIL — Mayor Michael Alvarez has declared June 23 as Olympic Day for Boy Scout Pack 276, which will hold a special event featuring Olympic events such as basketball, volleyball and ultimate Frisbee. The boys will be separated into different teams for the event and a past Olympian will speak to the boys about his Olympic adventure. Arnie Sowell participated in the 1956 Olympic games in Australia in track and field. He finished fourth in the men’s 800-meter and received Gold in the men’s 4x400m.
Olympic Day is a worldwide commemoration of Baron Pierre de Coubertin’s June 23, 1894, convening of the first International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting at the Sorbonne in Paris, and the founding of the Modern Olympic Games. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) throughout the world also will participate in the international celebration, with each Olympic Committee sending Olympic Day greetings to participating nations.
