WAXHAW – Get ready to run through 13 obstacles including a hay bale climb, wall climb, tire run, balance beams and ropes during the first-ever C2 Survivor Run hosted by YMCA of Greater Charlotte.
The event, set for June 2 at Cane Creek Park, is similar to a warrior run, where for 3.2 miles, runners brave difficult trails and maneuver their way through numerous obstacles all the way to the finish line.
Andi Kennington, event coordinator for the YMCA, said they picked Cane Creek for the event because of the trails.
“We thought it would be an amazing location for the event,” she said.
Kennington said the event will benefit Steele Creek YMCA’s after school and summer camp programs.
“We’re hoping this will be an annual event,” Kennington said, and she’s hoping for a turnout of 250 to 400 runners.
For those who don’t want to get muddy or climb ropes, Kennington said this is an event anyone can enjoy.
“Even if you don’t want to participate, there are volunteer opportunities, if you want to cheer people along at the obstacles or just be there as a spectator to watch people come across the finish line,” Kennington said.
She explained when the runners get half way, they’ll be across the lake and will be able to see the other side, knowing they’re almost at the end, and the spectators’ cheers would surely be a welcome sight to participants.
“I think it’ll be a fun event for people to come out and watch, instead of just another trail run,” Kennington said.
Kennington said this challenge is designed to get people outdoors and build “spirited community competition and team building.” Participants can compete as individuals or in teams of three.
The Survival Race is just one event the YMCA uses to raise money for its 2012 Community Support Campaign, which provides funding to after school and summer camp programs for children to engage in healthy activities.
The Community Support Campaign also supports the YReaders program, which helps Pre-K through second graders improve their reading ability, and teen programs that support the growth and future of teenagers in the community.
