MONROE – Throughout Union County, volunteer tutors teach adults to read and write with proficiency. Illiterate adults who acquire reading skills can help their children in school and meet work responsibilities.
The first step in becoming a tutor is participating in an orientation class, Literacy Council 101 held June 12 and Aug. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m., and June 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Literacy Council office, 105-A E. Jefferson St., Monroe.
A comprehensive training class will be offered to those who complete Literacy Council 101. Registration is required and can be done by calling the Literacy Council of Union County at 704-226-1425. For more information, visit www.literacyunion.org.
